Scottish Water

Scottish Water is the trusted utility provider for water and waste water treatment in Scotland,  

• delivering 1.52 billion litres of clear, fresh drinking water and; 

• removing 1.10 billion litres of wastewater after treating and recovering resources before safely returning it to the environment. 

They serve and supply water to nearly 2.61 million households and more than 150,000 business premises to support a flourishing Scotland. 

With more than 60,000 miles of pipes and over 2,000 treatment works, they are also one of the largest consumers of electricity in the country, requiring approximately 442 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy annually to power their operations – enough to power nearly 140,000 homes.  

The Scottish Government declared a climate emergency in 2019, and its Programme for Government announced
an ambitious plan to become carbon neutral by 2045. 

Scottish Water responded to this target by committing to net zero emissions by 2040, a full five years earlier.
